The Kunbi certificate has become the key to the OBC quota in Maharashtra. OBC means Other Backward Classes. Kunbi is already on the state OBC list. Manoj Jarange Patil says Maratha families should prove Kunbi genealogy from old gazettes, and fill a form in that same quota. Laxman Hake says new certificates will shrink OBC seats. 22,20,577 is his claim. Not a government table. A paper in hand is not an appointment letter.
This is the position on 3 October 2026. The three-month window is counted from 17 September. Do not write a win or a loss before December.
How the certificate is made
Three gazettes are named. Hyderabad, Satara and Aundh. Jarange wants the tehsil to issue a certificate if Kunbi shows in these records. On 17 September 2026 he ended a 20-day hunger strike, after a meeting at Patoda in Beed with Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. He gave the government three months. He said he wants the chief minister’s signature that not one Kunbi record will be left out. That signed paper did not show in these reports as an issued order.
In August 2026 Jarange said certificates were issued and also cancelled. The Hindu wrote the reason for some cancellations. The paper did not show that a blood relative on the father’s side was Kunbi. Names included Jyoti Shinde, Varsha Gaikwad, Komal Parve and Rekha Sarode. These are cases. Not a cancellation of the whole community.
58 lakh and 22 lakh
The Hindu wrote of a fight on the legality of 58 lakh entries. Jarange’s proposal was that these records be shown at the gram panchayat. 58 lakh is not a government table in this article. Hake’s figure of 22,20,577 certificates is also his claim. An official table was not found. Earlier reports said the national OBC federation did not back his Mumbai march. The OBC side is not one voice. Do not write one front.
The Hindu wrote of a 2025 government resolution. The line was quota in education and jobs for Marathas with Kunbi genealogy. Kunbi is already OBC. A new name entering the same pool is not a separate quota. A seat comes from the cutoff and the post. The paper alone does not give a seat.
What to do
If the certificate is in hand, keep a copy. If you want a new one, read the tehsil or district portal. Do not fill a social-media form. A link asking for money can be a fraud. Fadnavis has said the demand will be looked at inside the Constitution and the present rules. Looking inside the rules is not the same as giving the quota.
On 29 September Jarange spoke of patience, and of announcing a path after 15 days. The three-month period is still running. The fast starting again is his warning. A warning is not an order.
This is not the column story
The separate OBC column across the country is a demand about the census form. A Kunbi certificate is one family’s paper. A column being added will not make a tehsil paper. The numbers here are the numbers in the reports. A 20-day fast, ended on 17 September. Three months. Three gazettes. A fight over 58 lakh records. 22,20,577 is Hake’s claim. No crowd number.
A candidate with a roll number should not treat the certificate as a result. The result is on the recruitment portal. Check the state list for whether the name is on the OBC list. The creamy layer at 8 lakh is a separate paper. A gazette page alone does not become a certificate. Read the tehsil rule.
The gap between a paper and a seat
Say the grandfather’s gazette says Kunbi. If the tehsil issues a certificate, the family can fill a form in an OBC-quota recruitment. A seat is there when there is a post and a cutoff. The paper opens a form. It does not give a letter. The cancelled-certificate case is the reverse. The paper was made, then the record on the father’s side was not found, so it was cancelled. That is why you keep a copy, and ask the reason for a cancellation.
The fear on the OBC side is the pool. The quota is one pool. If new names enter the same pool, seats for older names can look fewer. That is what Hake is saying. 22,20,577 is his figure. Not a department list. Until a list is printed, the number is a forward. The federation did not back the Mumbai march, so not every OBC leader is on Hake’s line.
The three months open around December. The minister put the advocate general’s view on the Kolhapur and Satara gazettes at three to four months. A view arriving is not the quota coming into force. A signed promise paper did not become an issued order in these reports. If social media says the quota has been given, open the tehsil portal. If the name is not on the portal, the quota has not been given.

Advice:
The plain point is this. A Kunbi certificate is a caste paper, not a job letter. Jarange wants the OBC quota through genealogy. Hake says seats will shrink. 22 lakh is not a government table. The fast ended on 17 September, and there are three months. Keep a copy of the paper. Fill a new form on the tehsil portal. Do not open a social-media form or a payment link. Do not write a win or a loss before December.
