Banks are open today, 5 October 2026. It is a Monday. It is not a national holiday. Gandhi Jayanti was on 2 October, a Friday. Sunday 4 October was the weekly close. The branch should open today.
Net banking and UPI run at night too. The counter is a different matter. If you have to deposit a cheque, print a passbook or open a locker, check the branch time. If the city has a separate notice, that notice wins.
Why it looked closed
October is thick with festivals. People assume Monday is a holiday too. The RBI calendar does not name 5 October. Not for Indore, not for Bhopal, not for Delhi. A Mint report on 4 October said branches stay open from 5 to 9 October, unless a local holiday is notified.
The closed days are ahead. 10 October is the second Saturday, banks shut across the country. Bengaluru and Kolkata also mark Mahalaya Amavasya that day. 11 October is Sunday. On 19 October some cities have a Dussehra-related holiday. On 20 October most centres close for Dussehra. Gangtok and Imphal are written on a separate line.
Indore and MP
No bank-holiday notice turned up for 5 October in Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal was closed on 2 October for Gandhi Jayanti. Today’s counter work can be done. Branches open around 10. A private bank can shift by half an hour. Check the branch time in the app before you leave.
The mandi is a different door. Mandis reopen on Monday after two days. An open bank does not mean today’s rate is printed. Today’s soybean price was not confirmed, so the rate post was left out.
What can be done today
Cash deposit, a cheque clearing slip, KYC, a new cheque-book form. These are counter jobs. A UPI payment goes through at night. The NEFT window depends on the bank. An NEFT dropped on Sunday night can sit in Monday’s batch. If the slip says 5 October, keep that slip.
Locker time is asked at the branch. Do not arrive without a token. Some branches want a slot for Aadhaar update. No slot, and the counter can send you back.
The holidays ahead
The next close this week is 10 and 11 October. Second Saturday and Sunday. 24 October is the fourth Saturday, banks shut. 25 October is Sunday. Dussehra on 20 October will close banks in most places. If Indore gets a separate paper, that paper sits on top.
The full October 2026 list should not be squeezed onto one page. The RBI calendar is by centre. Indore is not on that list for 5 October.
What to check from home
Open the app. Read the branch status. If it says holiday, do not leave. If it does not, take the paper and a pen. The token goes early. After 10 the line is long.
A government office and a bank do not share one calendar. A collector’s holiday does not shut the bank by itself. The school can be closed and the bank open. Ask both.
Rahukalam is a panchang line, not a bank rule. The usual Monday window is 7:30 to 9:00, assuming sunrise at 6. The counter does not stop for it. Read a journey by your own belief. The shutter does not open by the panchang.
App and counter are not the same
An open bank app does not mean the shutter is up. The balance shows at night. The cashier is there after 10. Some branches cut a token at 9:30. In Indore a government bank and a private bank do not print one time. HDFC and ICICI can sit half an hour off SBI.
The cheque slip should have both the branch name and the date. A date of 4 October is a Sunday slip. Have today’s slip say 5. Passbook print is a machine in some branches, not the counter. If the machine is down, ask for a slip.
Where the holiday mix-up comes from
2 October was a long weekend. Friday shut, Saturday and Sunday empty on their own. On Monday people ask in that same rhythm. Rhythm is not a bank rule. The RBI paper runs by date. 5 October is not on that paper.
Dussehra is on 20 October. Not today. A Navratri fast does not close the bank. Monday’s fast is a home puja. The counter does not stop for it. You can reach the branch at 10 after the puja.
Advice:
You can go to the branch today. 5 October 2026 is a Monday, not a national bank holiday. The 2 October holiday is over. Check the branch time in the app before the counter. UPI runs at night. The next countrywide close is 10 October, the second Saturday. If the city notice says otherwise, follow that.
