OBC creamy layer 8 lakh: has the cap been raised?

Editorial illustration, not a real photo. Claims are from organisations. A court order is separate. Not legal advice. 3 October 2026.

The OBC creamy layer income cap is 8 lakh a year. On 13 September 2017 the Department of Personnel raised it from 6 lakh to 8 lakh. Children of families above that income are kept out of this quota slice. Group A officers and some other posts also fall in the creamy layer. Income alone is not the whole test.

Has it risen

In March 2026 Minister of State B L Verma wrote that there was no proposal for a further revision. BJP MP Bhim Singh asked in Zero Hour for 15 lakh. The National Commission for Backward Classes had suggested 15 lakh in 2015. That is a demand. The order has not changed.

The certificate

The state issues the non-creamy-layer certificate. A central job also needs the central list. This cap is not the main banner of the street agitation. Search mixes the column and the cap.
