Have Bengal OBC certificates been cancelled or not

Not every OBC certificate in Bengal has been cancelled. OBC means Other Backward Classes. The Calcutta High Court has commented on the state notifications of May-June 2025. LiveLaw wrote that those notifications lacked legal authority, and certificates made on them were held void from the start. The window in the reports runs around 8 May 2025 to 18 May 2026. The Supreme Court agreeing to hear a plea is not a final cancellation. If the paper is in your hand, do not throw it. Wait for the office note.

This is the position on 3 October 2026. Dates and lines are from court reports. This is not the census-column agitation.

What the High Court said

The division bench was Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Anuj Singh. The case was Shreyasi Dhang’s. She took an OBC-A certificate on 13 April 2026 in the Goala, Gope category. The court said the certificate was made on a void executive order, so it is invalid. Notifications between 8 May 2025 and 12 June 2025 were held to have no legal consequence. A later withdrawal was treated as working backwards.

Fact’s report writes the window wider. Certificates issued between 8 May 2025 and 12 June 2025, and certificates issued between 10 June 2025 and 18 May 2026, were also called void. 114 classes are mentioned. 77 and 37. In May and June 2025 the cabinet declared them OBC again. The court said that second declaration had no force of law. On 17 June 2025 the new government withdrew the old SLP in the Supreme Court, and the stay on the 114 classes was reported as revived.

NEET and JENPAS

The bench said candidates in NEET or JENPAS UG 2026 who claimed OBC on these cancelled notifications have to be treated as general category. That is the court’s line. The counselling notice will come from the board. Do not drop a seat on a rumour. Match the roll number and the category on that exam’s portal.

Classes from before 2010 are a separate line. The court said a person in the 66 classes saved by the coordinate bench of 22 May 2024 should apply afresh for an OBC certificate. An old paper does not open the new list by itself. The new form will be made at the tehsil or on the state portal.

The Supreme Court line

This case was reported to have reached the Supreme Court. Agreeing to hear, and issuing notice, is procedure. Not the final word of cancellation. The High Court comment is one order. A final Supreme Court verdict was not in these reports. Do not make the two one headline. Agreeing to hear does not mean throw the certificate. That is a wrong reading.

This does not change the reservation percent

At the Centre OBC reservation is 27 percent. This Bengal case is about the state list and the validity of certificates. 27 does not fall by itself. The creamy layer limit of 8 lakh is separate. The 87:13 held recruitment in Madhya Pradesh is separate. The Kunbi certificate in Maharashtra is separate. The national OBC column is a demand about the census form. A column being added will not make this Bengal paper valid or cancelled.

Pages in the same line: the separate census column, how much the reservation is and creamy layer at 8 lakh.

A simple example

Say the certificate is dated 13 April 2026, and the class on it is from the 2025 notification. The High Court line falls on this paper. If the college form said OBC, the board is talking of treating it as general. Drop the seat only when a counselling notice comes. Second case. The certificate is of a saved class from before 2010. The court is asking for a fresh form. Third case. The certificate is outside this window. Do not treat it as cancelled by this headline. Read the date on the paper.

The numbers here are the numbers in the reports. Notifications of May-June 2025. Window of 8 May 2025 to 18 May 2026. 114 classes, 77 and 37. 66 classes reported saved by the bench of 22 May 2024. Shreyasi Dhang’s certificate of 13 April 2026. No crowd number.

Do not match an old result to the new order. On the portal of the exam your roll number belongs to, check the category. If WhatsApp says every certificate is cancelled, check the date.

What to match while reading the paper

Read the date on the certificate. If it is inside 8 May 2025 to 18 May 2026, this window’s news can fall on you. If the date is outside, do not treat it as cancelled by this headline. Read the class name. Whether it is in the 114 list or in the 66 from before 2010 will show from the class written on the form. OBC-A and OBC-B are Bengal’s own classes. Do not paste one rule on both by itself.

A college seat and a job letter are separate. The NEET and JENPAS line is about counselling. An appointment letter for a government job comes on a department order. Do not make the two one cancellation on WhatsApp.

A counselling letter is there only when the board allots a seat. A court comment alone does not cut the allotment until the category changes on the portal. Check the portal, not a group forward.

Advice:

The plain point is this. In Bengal the High Court has called OBC certificates made on the May-June 2025 notifications invalid from the start. The window of 8 May 2025 to 18 May 2026 is in the reports. NEET and JENPAS candidates who claimed OBC on that notification can be treated as general. This is not a cancellation of every old paper. Do not throw the paper. Read the date and the class. Do not drop a seat on a rumour. Wait for the board or college notice. The Supreme Court agreeing to hear is not a final cancellation. This case is not the census column.
