Complete Shailputri — Jai Giriraj Kishori lyrics in Hindi

Read the complete hymn in the order shown below. Your family or temple may sing slightly different words; compare with the reading used there.

A simple English explanation

Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. This hymn describes the Mother and the devotee’s prayer. Each note explains two consecutive couplets. They are a simple explanation, not a word-for-word translation.

  1. The Mother is greeted as Shailputri, riding a bull, and as Bhavani, beloved of Shiva.
  2. Parvati and Uma are names of the Mother. References to happiness and prosperity express devotional belief.
  3. The devotee prays for hopes to be fulfilled and sorrow to ease. The hymn also recalls Monday and Shiva.
  4. The verse describes a lamp and coconut offering, followed by sincere chanting and a respectful bow.
  5. Giriraj Kishori means the daughter of the king of mountains, Himalaya. The final verse is a prayer for happiness and grace.
