The person searching a Navdurga mantra is not looking for the whole Durga Saptashati. They want the one name line for that morning, said in front of the thali. Below are the nine name mantras. 108 repetitions are a habit in many homes. They are not a rule. One mala, eleven, or five minutes without counting — as much as the house can keep.

- Shailputri — Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah. 11 October.
- Brahmacharini — Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah. 12 October.
- Chandraghanta — Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah. 13 October.
- Kushmanda — Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah. 14 October.
- Skandamata — Om Devi Skandamataayai Namah. 15 October.
- Katyayani — Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah. 16 October.
- Kalaratri — Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah. 17 October.
- Mahagauri — Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah. 18 October.
- Siddhidatri — Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah. 19 October.
How it is said
After a bath, in clean cloth, facing the kalash or the picture. The mala moves on the thumb and middle finger, not the index. That too is household teaching, not an examination. If the phone rings, stop the mala, finish the talk, then continue. Some homes insist on restarting a broken count. It is not required.
The morning jaap is kept on an empty stomach in many families. The same name mantra is said again after the evening aarti. Do not mix today’s line with tomorrow’s. Writing today’s name on the wall is enough for children.
Beej and dhyana
On Shailputri many homes also say Hreem Shivayai Namah. They call it the beej. On the other days the name mantra is treated as enough. The day-one dhyana is: Vande vanchhitalabhaya chandrarthakritashekharam. Vrisharudham shuladharam Shailaputrim yashasvinim. A half-moon crown, the bull, the trident. It does not replace the stotra. Durga Chalisa is read separately, across the nine days.
What slips
Namah becomes namahi. Shailaputryai becomes Shailaputri namah. The meaning does not collapse. Pronunciation slips from house to house. If the family pothi has another reading, keep the pothi. One line from the internet does not outrank the old paper. No mantra here promises a job, a cure, or the end of a case.
