How to Download an FIR Copy Online and Check Case Status

Start with the police portal for the correct state

In brief: Use the official police/citizen portal for the state and station where the FIR was registered. Find View FIR or Published FIR and enter the correct district, station, FIR number and year. If unavailable online, request a copy from the station. BNSS section 173(2) gives the informant or victim a prompt, free copy.

A complaint acknowledgement is not automatically an FIR number. Police complaints, registered FIRs and court cases are distinct records or stages. An empty search does not establish that the other record does not exist.

This guide explains common steps and official routes for Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Menus, authentication and availability vary by state, unit and privacy rules.

1. Keep the correct search details ready

Record the state, police district/commissionerate, station, FIR number and registration year. Use the actual registration date or requested date range. The incident year may differ from the FIR registration year.

Similarly named stations and repeated FIR numbers across years can produce the wrong match. Check whether the station belongs to a city commissionerate or a rural district. If you only have a complaint reference, ask the station whether an FIR was registered and obtain its details.

For legal filing, insurance or employment requirements, confirm whether a portal print is sufficient or a certified copy is needed. A downloaded PDF is not automatically equivalent to a certified court copy.

2. Download from the official state service

Start on the state police website and follow its Citizen Services/View FIR link. Digital Police provides a national entry point for citizen-service information; do not assume it has one public search box containing every FIR.

1) Select the correct unit and station. 2) Enter the FIR number/year or requested date range. 3) Complete the portal’s login/OTP and captcha where required. 4) Check the number, station and date against the result. 5) Open the available View/Download option and save the PDF. Printing to PDF does not certify a document.

MP Police offers an FIR View route. Maharashtra’s Published FIR service uses filters including date range, unit and police station. West Bengal CID’s search covers selected units; other districts or commissionerates may publish on their own official websites.

Avoid unknown APKs, paid FIR-finder promises and login links from unverified messages. A caller asking for your banking PIN or OTP is not the same as the portal’s own authentication process.

3. Understand upload timelines and privacy exceptions

The Supreme Court’s 7 September 2016 Youth Bar Association order directs publication of ordinary, non-sensitive FIRs on official websites within 24 hours of registration. Specified unavoidable/connectivity difficulties allow 48 hours, with a maximum 72-hour extension for geographical connectivity problems. This is not a guarantee of an instant public PDF for every case.

Sexual offences, POCSO cases, terrorism/insurgency and other sensitive or privacy-related matters can be withheld from public upload. The examples are not exhaustive. It is also incorrect to say every murder FIR is automatically excluded.

A missing online copy does not establish that the complaint is false, the case is closed or arrest is impossible. An accused person facing legal risk should not delay advice while waiting for a search result.

FACT: Public-upload directions and the informant/victim’s right to a free copy are separate matters. You need not rely only on refreshing a website to seek a copy lawfully.

4. Request a copy if the search fails

Recheck year, unit and date range. Portal errors, archive coverage, transfer/renumbering or restricted publication may explain the absence. Send the station a written clarification request with the information you have.

BNSS section 173(2) requires a copy of the recorded information to be provided forthwith, free of charge, to the informant or victim. Other applicants and accused persons may need a different lawful certified-copy route, with applicable fees and privacy conditions. Ask the police authority or relevant court copying section.

Template: 'I am [name], the [accurate role: informant/victim/other] in FIR [number/year], police station [name]. Please provide a copy under the applicable procedure. I could not obtain it through the public portal on [date]. I can supply the required identity/connection evidence. Contact: [contact].'

This is an ordinary request, not a legal notice. Keep acknowledgement. Do not bypass access restrictions or use another person’s login for a sensitive record.

5. Check police and court status separately

Use the acknowledgement for a state portal’s complaint-status service where offered. An FIR PDF does not provide the entire investigation diary or all confidential papers. Seek permissible progress information from the investigating officer or station.

If a court case has been registered and is available on eCourts, use the CNR or FIR-number option in Case Status. Select the relevant location/court complex and station, enter FIR number/year and use the available Pending/Disposed/Both and captcha controls.

The court case number is different from the FIR number. A case may not yet have reached the court system, digitisation may be pending or search details may be wrong. No result on eCourts does not cancel a police FIR.

Review the matched case details, next date and available orders. Disposed is not automatically an acquittal; read the actual order and take advice about its effect.

Frequently asked questions

Is every FIR available without login? No. Authentication, coverage and restrictions vary.

Does submitting an online complaint always register an FIR? No. Verify registration and the FIR reference separately.

Can I search all Indian FIRs using only a name? Do not assume a universal public service exists. Use the relevant state/unit portal.

Does no PDF mean cancellation? No. Confirm through the police or lawful legal process.

Is every portal PDF a certified copy? No. Check the requirements for your intended use.

Advice: preserve the original and protect identities

Keep the original PDF and note its official source and download date. Retain the unedited version if you annotate a reading copy. Allegations in an FIR are not proven offences or judicial findings.

Do not circulate identifying information about victims, children, witnesses or other people in public groups. If authenticity is doubtful, use the related verification guide and confirm with the police record.

Disclaimer: General legal information, not individual advice. Procedure depends on state, applicant role, sensitivity and current court/portal rules. Seek qualified guidance for urgent matters.
