On 2 October 2026 the Jantar Mantar call against the Chief Election Commissioner met a sealed site. Detention figures do not match. The Indian Express put police figures near 550 and claims near 700. AajTak wrote about 1,100. Al Jazeera reported more than 500 by afternoon, including Atishi. Afternoon counts grow by evening. Detention, being put on a bus, and a thana entry are not the same act.
This article does not pick one number and call the rest false. The range is hundreds, about 500 to 1,100 depending on the source. A written Delhi Police release would settle it.
Names that appeared in reports
Former chief minister Atishi, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Sanjeev Jha were reported detained from AAP. So were RJD’s Manoj Jha, CPI(M)’s Brinda Karat and general secretary M.A. Baby, CPI’s P. Sandosh Kumar, AISA national president Neha Bora, Yogendra Yadav, Nikhil Dey and NSUI’s Vinod Jakhar. The Wire and Deccan Chronicle carried these names. Personal remand is not confirmed here for each.
Images of Neha Bora circulated widely. People asked why CJP could gather in Mumbai while student leaders were stopped in Delhi. The comparison is political. The legal point is that the two city orders differed. Mumbai also denied permission, yet the park filled. Delhi’s Section 163 and barricades looked stricter.
Detention is not arrest
Hindi headlines reach for giraftar quickly. Police often say detained: stopped, bused, then released. An FIR and jail are later steps. By the morning of 3 October no mass charge-sheet on these names had been confirmed. Families should ask the thana, not a caption.
Many people were stopped before they reached Jantar Mantar. Eleven to twelve metro stations were closed. Internet was limited. Fewer videos, more rumours.
Who called the Delhi protest
The Delhi programme was announced by AISA, Manoj Jha and Prashant Bhushan for 11 am, over the CEC and SIR. CJP’s main stage that day was Mumbai. Same theme, many organisers.
