A QR stand sits on the counter and someone asks you to pay quickly. The screen displays a recipient name, but does it match the person or business you intended? A short check before authorizing a transfer is easier than disputing a mistaken payment. BHIM MyUPI provides a Verify UPI ID Before I Pay feature; the final payment screen still needs your attention.
Verify a UPI ID in MyUPI
Sign in to BHIM, open the MyUPI banner and select Continue to MyUPI. Choose Verify UPI ID Before I Pay, enter the exact UPI ID and inspect the available verification details. BHIM’s support instructions say to proceed only after verification. If one character differs or the displayed identity is unexpected, stop and confirm the recipient through an independent channel.
What about a QR or phone number?
NPCI BHIM describes checking the real name associated with a UPI ID, number or QR through MyUPI. After scanning, compare the displayed recipient with the merchant and the context of the payment. A printed QR stand could have been replaced or an old screenshot forwarded. Do not follow instructions in a message to scan an unknown code and enter your payment PIN without understanding the transaction.
Five seconds at the final screen
Read the recipient name, the visible UPI ID, amount and purpose again immediately before authorizing. A matching name is a useful signal, not a guarantee that a seller is legitimate. If someone is pressuring you, pause and verify via an official contact channel. An impulsive small test transfer can also reach the wrong account.
What verification cannot prove
A valid UPI ID does not prove that goods will be delivered or that the recipient is trustworthy. A fraudster can use a real identity too. Treat MyUPI verification as a check of the payment destination, not an endorsement of a business. For a remote purchase, also inspect the invoice, official seller channel and independent identity signals.
If the money goes to the wrong place
Contact your bank and the payment app promptly with the transaction reference. MyUPI offers a complaint route for eligible transactions, but it cannot promise an instant reversal of a completed transfer. For suspected cyber fraud in India, report it quickly to 1930 and the government portal. Do not share a PIN or OTP with anyone claiming to recover the money.
Receiving money is different
Be wary of anyone who says you must enter a UPI PIN simply to receive money. Scanning a QR and entering a payment PIN is generally associated with sending funds; read the debit or credit indication on screen. Do not let someone on a call rush you through a transfer.
