FIR copy real or fake: what a photo can tell you
A photograph or PDF arrives on WhatsApp and the sender claims a case has been registered in your name. Do not decide under pressure. Whether an FIR copy is real or fake cannot be established from its appearance alone. Match its reference, year and police station with reliable official records.
Document authenticity is also different from the truth of an allegation. A genuine registered FIR can contain disputed allegations. This article concerns the source and identity of a copy; it does not decide guilt or whether a complaint is factually correct.
Details to match before drawing a conclusion

The illustration below is a fictional checklist sample. It is neither an actual state FIR nor a government form intended for use. Its labels identify questions to ask during verification.
Record the FIR number together with its year, district or police unit and police station. A number without the year and station can be ambiguous. The registration date may also differ from the alleged incident date.
Check whether you have all pages or only a cropped screenshot. Compare names, cited provisions and the incident description with the record relevant to you. Ask for a clear complete copy and an explanation from the appropriate office if the document is unclear.
A mismatch calls for investigation; it does not automatically prove forgery. A scan, translation or separate later record can create confusion. Conversely, someone could attach an altered document to a genuine reference, so matching the number alone is not sufficient.
Limits of stamps, signatures and PDF metadata
A logo, blue stamp or signature image is not conclusive authentication. Equally, a monochrome print or the absence of a visible hand stamp does not automatically make a copy false. Paper and digital copies can look different.
PDF author fields, software names and creation dates provide context, not a complete authenticity finding. A screenshot cannot validate an embedded digital signature. If a signature claim matters, the original file and suitable verification may be needed.
FACT: Official-looking design and independent confirmation from the issuing office are different things. An AI sample is not evidence of an actual FIR or a universal format for every state.
Verify through the state police service and issuing office

Open the relevant state police website independently. The Digital Police directory of state citizen portals can help locate the official service. Follow the available FIR search/view and access process rather than relying only on a link or phone number supplied by the unknown sender.
In Madhya Pradesh, follow the police citizen-services route to FIR viewing. Maharashtra provides a published-FIR search with fields including unit, station, dates and reference number. Other jurisdictions may have different access, registration or verification requirements. Never disclose an OTP to an unexpected caller.
If a record is available, match the number, year, station and relevant contents. If necessary, obtain station or district contact details from an official directory and ask how issuance and lawful copy access can be confirmed.
Your role as informant, victim, accused or another requester can affect the route. Section 173(2) BNSS provides for a free copy of the recorded information forthwith to the informant or victim. For certified copies or court use, ask the appropriate office or a local lawyer about the applicable procedure.
If the FIR is not online or you only have a complaint receipt
An absent online result does not, by itself, prove that no FIR exists or that a document is forged. Check search filters, service availability and access requirements. Do not attempt to bypass privacy or access restrictions to obtain sensitive records.
An online complaint acknowledgement, petition/diary reference and registered FIR should not be treated as interchangeable documents. Ask the office what stage the complaint has reached. Do not present a complaint reference as an FIR number without confirmation.
If the online service is unavailable, use the appropriate lawful station or district-office route. A website problem is not a reason to disregard a real notice, hearing or legal deadline. Seek qualified help where needed.
Advice: preserve the copy and respond safely to threats
Retain the original file, sender information, receipt time and messages. Avoid posting the complete FIR in public groups. Protect addresses, witness details and sensitive information about victims, children and other people. Use a redacted copy when sharing for assistance.
Do not transfer money simply because someone promises to remove an FIR, prevent arrest or verify your accounts. Check the threat independently. For financial cyber fraud, contact your bank promptly and report through 1930/cybercrime.gov.in; recovery is not guaranteed.
A neutral enquiry can say: “I received a copy referring to FIR ___, year ___, station ___. Please explain the official process for lawful access and verification.” This is a general enquiry example, not an affidavit or statutory form.
If you dispute a genuine FIR, preserve truthful evidence and seek legal advice. Do not edit the copy to make it say something else. Authenticity checks do not replace separate advice about investigation, bail or court remedies.
Questions about FIR copy verification
Can a photo prove that an FIR is fake? It may reveal inconsistencies, but authoritative verification is still needed.
Does an absent online result mean there is no case? No. Availability and access limits may apply.
Is every copy sent through WhatsApp fake? No. The delivery method alone is not decisive.
Does a genuine FIR prove its allegations? No. Authenticity and the merits of allegations are separate questions.
Can I use the sample as an FIR template? No. It is a fictional illustration, not an official form.
