PhonePe or GPay Money After Death: Claim Without the UPI PIN

PhonePe or GPay Money After Death: Claim Without the UPI PIN

A locked phone does not mean the bank money is lost

After a family member dies, finding their phone locked can create an urgent worry: how will the family recover money associated with PhonePe or Google Pay without the UPI PIN? For ordinary bank-linked UPI, the deposit is held by the bank. Eligible claimants should use the bank’s deceased-account claim process rather than try to access the deceased person’s payments.

This guide concerns India. It separates linked bank deposits from PhonePe Wallet, UPI Lite, gift vouchers, investments and insurance. These products should not be treated as one recoverable app balance.

First identify where the money is held

Google Pay uses linked bank accounts for ordinary person-to-person UPI payments. PhonePe also supports bank-linked UPI, alongside other products. A payment history is a record of activity, not proof of the bank’s current balance.

Use lawfully available passbooks, bank correspondence, cheque books or other family records to identify the bank. Ask it how to locate the account if the number is unavailable. Unlocking the phone is not a prerequisite for submitting an eligible bank claim.

FACT: A UPI PIN authorises payments. It does not establish inheritance rights. A deceased-depositor claim is a separate process that does not depend on resetting that PIN.

Five practical steps for the family

  1. Obtain the death certificate. Check identifying details and ask how any discrepancy with bank records should be addressed.
  2. Notify the bank in writing. Include available account information and retain an acknowledgement.
  3. Explain your capacity. State whether you are a nominee, surviving joint holder or legal heir. Possession of the phone is not one of these capacities.
  4. Request the current claim pack. Obtain the prescribed form and case-specific document checklist from the branch or official website.
  5. Keep a submission record. Preserve copies, dates, references and the list of documents delivered.

Do not impersonate the deceased to make UPI or ATM withdrawals, even if the family knows the PIN. Do not reset their PIN as a shortcut to distributing the estate. Ask the bank to handle the account under its applicable death-claim and operating instructions.

Nominee, no nominee and joint accounts

With a nominee: the bank verifies the relevant nomination, death and claimant identity. Receiving payment from the bank does not automatically settle the ultimate rights of all legal heirs. A succession certificate should not be described as compulsory in every straightforward nomination case.

Without a nominee: the deposit is not automatically forfeited. Ask for the applicable legal-heir procedure and whether heirship evidence, consents, disclaimers or an indemnity are needed. A disputed estate or a will can change the documentary route.

With a joint holder: the account mandate, including any survivorship instruction, matters. A nominee need not become entitled to receive payment immediately after the first joint holder dies. Have the bank explain the position for that specific mandate.

Check the bank’s submission channels before travelling. SBI, for example, publishes an option to lodge deposit claims at a branch of the claimant’s choice. Do not assume this describes every bank or every financial product.

Prepare documents and treat Wallet funds separately

A useful preparation folder contains the death certificate, completed claim form, claimant identification/KYC, available account records, contact details and any payment-account evidence requested. Additional estate documents depend on the claimant’s status and the circumstances. Ask for a written checklist rather than paying for an affidavit before knowing whether it is needed.

If money is specifically in PhonePe Wallet, contact official PhonePe support for its deceased-holder claim procedure. Ask what evidence is required and where any eligible closure refund would go. A linked-bank claim does not automatically settle a wallet, voucher, insurance policy or investment.

Retain copies of documents handed over. Never sign blank forms. Keep sensitive account and identity records out of public comments and social-media complaints.

A covering request and what to do if the claim stalls

To the Branch Manager, [bank/branch]. Subject: Request for deceased-depositor claim procedure. [Name] died on [date]. Available account details are [details]. I am applying in the capacity of [nominee/surviving joint holder/legal heir]. Please provide the prescribed claim form, the applicable document checklist and acknowledgement of receipt. Enclosures: [documents actually attached]. Name, contact details, date and signature.

This note accompanies the process; it does not replace the prescribed claim form. If the bank keeps asking for documents, request a written list of deficiencies and the reason for them. Escalate through its grievance channel with the submission record. Before approaching RBI CMS, check the current admissibility and timing rules on the official portal.

Advice: preserve records and avoid recovery scams

You do not need to buy phone-unlock software to apply for linked bank deposits. A factory reset may erase useful records. Do not give unknown callers the SIM, OTPs, PINs or remote screen access. Use support details obtained from official bank or provider channels.

Create a separate list of banks, wallets and other financial products. Ask the relevant institution how pending refunds, pension credits or later deposits should be handled; a post-death credit is not automatically available for personal spending.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit a claim without the UPI PIN?

Yes. An eligible claimant applies through the bank’s deceased-claim process, not through the deceased person’s UPI login.

Is the death certificate alone enough?

Expect identification and a claim form as well. The bank’s checklist determines the remaining case-specific documents.

What if both the phone and passbook are missing?

Ask the bank about identifying the account using available lawful records and claimant verification. Do not assume phone access is mandatory.

Does nomination decide the entire inheritance?

No. Bank payment and ultimate inheritance are different questions governed by the relevant law and facts.

Will this claim cover Wallet and insurance too?

Separate providers and products can require separate claims or closure requests.
