Mamata Banerjee’s 6 lakh claim returned to search on 2 October 2026. She said seats the Trinamool won by about one lakh votes in 2021 lost about 6 lakh names each during SIR. She called Gyanesh Kumar a dacoit. That is an allegation. The Commission has denied manipulation. A rally sentence is not a seat-wise table.
What the number implies
She was speaking of assembly seats, not Lok Sabha seats. An assembly seat usually has around two to three lakh voters. Six lakh deletions on one seat is larger than the seat. Either she added several seats, or the language was loose, or she meant a gross list at some stage. Reports did not publish a table. Do not treat 6 lakh as a verified fact until the draft and final rolls are compared.
She also named Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and Bengal, and the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Her party’s 2026 Bengal defeat is the context. Whether SIR caused the defeat is a matter for petitions and a roll audit, not a slogan.
The Commission’s side
The Commission says SIR removes the dead, the shifted and duplicates, and that the last intensive revision was about 25 years old. Claims and objections had a window. On 2 October it also ordered a drive to enrol eligible people left out.
