The 22-carat rate for 5 October 2026 is not printed yet. It is Monday morning. MCX opens later. The 4 October papers do not agree. One wrote Delhi 22-carat near 1,36,900 rupees per 10 grams, another 1,37,528. Indore’s board today will be separate. One number is not written here.
The question that comes more often is not the rate. How much a jeweller cuts when you sell old gold. That cut is not a government table. It is the shop slip.
Board and bill
The board says 22 carat. The bill splits the gold rate, the making charge and the stone. Give an old bangle back, and the making charge does not return. The labour you paid once was never inside the gold rate. The jeweller will weigh the gold, take off stone and enamel, then write a melting cut.
Whether the cut is 2 percent or 10, the shop will say. Have it written. Do not keep a spoken line. Match the weight at two shops the same day. The scale should be in front of your eyes.
Hallmark and HUID
New jewellery should carry the BIS mark, a purity number and a 6-digit HUID. 22 carat is written as 916. 916 alone is not enough. New sales after 1 April 2023 are asked for the HUID mark. An old piece already at home can be without HUID. You can get it marked at a testing centre before a sale.
HUID is read in the BIS Care app, under Verify HUID. If the number does not open, do not buy. A mark on the clasp and none on the rest of the chain, show the whole piece.
The hallmark fee
The old practice was 45 rupees a piece. A 4 October 2026 report said the fee became 75 rupees an article after a BIS notice of 14 September 2026. Silver’s fee was written as unchanged. If the bill says 200 or 500 rupees as a hallmark fee, ask. The real fee is a small note. A big sum can be a making charge.
Exchanging old gold
An exchange board shows a high rate. The new piece is charged making again. The gain is cut on the same slip. Stone weight is separate from gold. Have both the empty weigh and the stone weigh written. The melting-cut percent should be on the slip. If it is not, do not sign.
This morning’s silver rate is not printed either. One 4 October report wrote silver near 2,26,610 rupees a kilo. That is yesterday’s paper, not today’s board.
An Indore shop
A city rate is not the Delhi table. Indore’s market board moves after 10. Do not treat a night number as the morning. Dhanteras is ahead. Buying in a crowd without a slip costs more. The cash limit is your own. A large payment asks for a bill and PAN. Ask the shop, not a group.
An agent’s WhatsApp rate is not a notice. Do not send money ahead. Keep the piece in your hand until the weigh is done.
Advice:
Today’s 22-carat rate is not on this page, because the morning board is not printed. The 4 October papers sit between 1,36,900 and 1,37,528. The cut on old gold is the shop’s. Making charges do not come back. Read the HUID in the app. Question a large fee. Weigh at two shops. Do not send money ahead.
