9 August 1945, 11:02 a.m. A column rose over Nagasaki and opened a mushroom head. Hiroshima had burned three days earlier. Japan had not surrendered. The second strike left Bockscar, a B-29 flown by Maj. Charles Sweeney. Kokura was first on the card. Haze hid the aim point. Fuel was short. The plane turned south. A crack opened in the cloud. The bomb burst over the Urakami valley.
The Nagasaki mushroom cloud 1945 is that column. Newspapers ran the cloud. The ground ran less. Immediate deaths are written in a wide band — often 40,000 to 75,000 — and the months after added more. This article will not explain a device. It will stay with the cloud and the morning.
Who photographed the Nagasaki cloud
The strike plane was Bockscar. The Great Artiste and Big Stink flew as observers. Big Stink missed the rendezvous. The physicist assigned a high-speed camera grabbed a raft instead of a parachute and stayed on Tinian. Lt. Charles Levy, 26, kept his own 4×5 on The Great Artiste. Other frames are sometimes tied to a tail gunner’s smaller camera.
Levy later said the cloud looked alive, boiling like coffee, colored like death. The Army caption put the smoke above 60,000 feet. The New York Times and Life printed the pillar. Pictures of the streets arrived late and thin.

Kokura was the target
Kokura’s plants sat first. Morning haze — some notes add smoke from a fire at Yahata — hid the point. Sweeney took one run, then Nagasaki. Bombardier Kermit Beahan saw a hole. The planned dock aim was gone; he took the industrial valley. The burst is placed near a tennis court in Matsuyama, a few hundred meters off the plan.
Hiroshima is flat. Nagasaki sits in hills. Urakami burned. The harbor side kept more. So the map of ruin is not Hiroshima’s circle. Clocks stopped at 11:02. Six days later, on 15 August, the emperor announced the end. The surrender was signed on 2 September.
Hills saved part of the city. The count was still heavy.
Why the cloud traveled and the city did not
