June 1907. Alfred Stieglitz sailed for Bremen with his wife Emmy and their daughter. The ship was the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II. First class, at Emmy’s insistence. On about the third day he left the upper deck, looked down into steerage, and saw a picture: a round straw hat, the funnel leaning left, the stair leaning right, a white bridge of chain, crossed suspenders, a circle of iron, a mast cutting the sky. He ran to the cabin. A 4×5 Auto-Graflex. One unexposed plate. He came back. The man in the hat was still there. The shutter fell.
The frame is public domain. It was published in the United States before 1930. We print that picture. The Ellis Island arrival story is wrong — the ship was bound for Europe. The people below may have been craftsmen going home when papers ran out.
How The Steerage was made
The plate was developed in Paris. Stieglitz held it four years. October 1911, Camera Work 36 — an issue of his new style, with a Cubist drawing by Picasso. In 1915 a larger photogravure ran in 291. A gallery debut came around the Armory Show in 1913. Later prints live at the Met, MoMA, the Getty.
Around 1942 he wrote that he had seen shapes and, under them, a feeling about life. “If all my photographs were lost and I were represented by one, The Steerage, I would be satisfied.” He argued geometry more than social document. Viewers still read both: class on two decks, and a triangle of stair and funnel.
The camera was a single-lens reflex. One exposure. The crowd did not move; luck held. He wrote of release from the mob called rich. Rembrandt came to mind, he said.

Shape or document
The people below are poor; the eye knows that. The man above is an art dealer — 291, Camera Work. The photograph locks both floors in one frame without a speech. That is why modernists raised it next to painting: structure over subject.
Wrong captions ran for decades — immigrants arriving in America. The direction is reversed. The fact is small. The myth is large. Search still types both.
