What should you do if bank locker contents are missing or damaged?
Missing jewellery, damaged property papers or signs of termites inside a bank locker call for a careful record of what you found. Notify the branch in writing promptly, preserve the available evidence and request an inspection and written response. Saying that valuables were kept in the locker is only the start of a claim. Liability depends on the event, applicable instructions and supporting facts.
Direct answer: RBI’s locker framework provides a liability formula equal to 100 times the prevailing annual locker rent in specified circumstances. This is neither an automatic payment for every kind of damage nor comprehensive insurance for everything stored inside. Theft, employee fraud, termite damage and a natural disaster should not be treated as identical claims.
When does the 100-times-annual-rent rule apply?
The specified events include fire, theft, burglary, robbery, dacoity and building collapse, within the framework addressing the bank’s security responsibilities, shortcomings, negligence and acts or omissions. Loss attributable to fraud by bank employees is also addressed. Read the applicable directions alongside your bank’s current locker policy and agreement.
For a purely illustrative calculation, annual rent of ₹3,000 multiplied by 100 gives ₹3,00,000. That arithmetic does not establish that a particular claim will be admitted or paid for that amount. Ask the bank to identify the rent figure, liability provision and calculation it applies.
Who is responsible for termite damage in a bank locker?
Do not assume termite damage automatically triggers the 100-times formula. Termites are not separately named in the specified-event list. Assessment instead requires attention to the cause, the bank’s duty of care, maintenance shortcomings, policy terms and evidence. This is a case-specific assessment, not a separate guaranteed termite payout.
If you find insects, damp packaging or damaged papers, notify the branch before disposing of material or thoroughly cleaning the contents. Photograph the condition and request an inspection and damage inventory. Preserve safe-to-retain remnants, earlier photographs, document copies and previous correspondence. Personal safety takes priority if handling the material poses a risk.
Describe the condition you actually observed rather than relying only on a conclusion that the bank must be at fault. Request examination of relevant maintenance and pest-control records. Asking for records does not mean every internal or security record must automatically be disclosed directly to the customer.
Exceptions and insurance: what should you check?
Natural calamities and loss attributable solely to the customer’s fault or negligence have separate provisions. Banks also retain appropriate-care responsibilities. Avoid both blanket claims: that every flood removes all bank responsibility, or that every damaged item must be reimbursed in full.
DICGC deposit insurance concerns bank deposits such as savings, current and fixed deposits. Do not treat locker jewellery or documents as part of the same ₹5 lakh deposit cover. Locker rent is not automatically an insurance premium. Read the agreement’s permitted-use and insurance terms rather than relying on assumptions.
Evidence to prepare for a locker loss claim
- Your locker agreement, locker number, branch details and annual rent receipt.
- The last authorised visit date, operation alerts and the date and time damage was discovered.
- Available purchase invoices, earlier photographs, valuations, document copies and a factual inventory of the loss.
- Bank complaint acknowledgements, inspection notes, responses and any police complaint record.
An invoice or old photograph may support a claim but does not, by itself, prove an item was inside at the relevant time. Label estimates honestly. Ask the bank to preserve relevant access logs and available CCTV. Do not assume there will be footage of the private act of placing items inside the locker.
A bank complaint and compensation request template
To: Branch Manager, ___ Bank, ___ Branch. Subject: Missing/damaged contents in locker number ___.
When I accessed the locker on ___ at ___, I observed ___. I attach the details of the contents, to the best of my knowledge, and the discrepancy or damage found. Please acknowledge this complaint, preserve relevant records and available CCTV, arrange an inspection and provide written findings. Please assess my claim under the applicable RBI directions, locker policy and agreement, and explain your decision and any calculation in writing. Attachments: ___. Name, contact and date: ___.
Keep proof that the bank received the complaint and follow its grievance process. Where theft or unauthorised access is suspected, also give the police a factual account. A bank’s review and a criminal investigation serve different purposes; preserve the records of both.
Advice: escalate without missing the complaint deadline
Complain to the bank first. RBI’s 2026 Ombudsman FAQ permits an eligible CMS complaint after a dissatisfied response or generally after 30 days without a reply, subject to any longer prescribed timeline. It also states a 90-day filing window from expiry of the applicable timeline or the bank’s last communication, whichever is later. Check current maintainability rather than relying on older articles.
Proceedings on the same grievance before another judicial forum can affect Ombudsman maintainability. For a high-value dispute or contested evidence, obtain advice on the appropriate consumer or other legal remedy. No forum or complaint guarantees recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Will the bank reimburse the full jewellery value?
Not automatically. The incident, applicable liability and evidence determine how the claim is assessed.
How is 100 times annual rent calculated?
Illustrative annual rent of ₹3,000 gives ₹3 lakh. Ask the bank to confirm the applicable rent and legal basis.
Does termite damage guarantee that payment?
No. The cause and maintenance or duty-of-care issues need separate assessment.
Can I complain without purchase bills?
Yes. Supply other available evidence honestly; missing proof can affect assessment of the claim.
Must I pay an agent to approach the Ombudsman?
No. The official complaint process is free. Use RBI’s CMS and retain the reference number.
