M4A to MP3 Converter Online – Convert Audio Files

Convert an M4A audio file to MP3 on your device. Choose your recording, select a bitrate, listen to the result and download a real MP3. Your original M4A stays unchanged.

Convert your M4A audio to MP3

Choose an M4A up to 25 MB and 5 minutes. The full decoded audio track is converted on your device. Your audio is not uploaded.

A higher bitrate cannot restore quality missing from the original. Only one decoded mono or stereo audio track is converted.

Turn your M4A recording into an MP3

Have an M4A voice recording that you want to share with an app that accepts MP3? This tool creates a separate MP3 copy. It can be useful for a short voice memo, interview, spoken lesson or audio file you made yourself.

The converter processes the complete audio that the browser decodes. It does not cut the recording, change playback speed or add effects. For example, an eight-second stereo M4A produces an MP3 with roughly eight seconds of audio and two channels.

Use your own recordings or audio you have permission to convert. This tool accepts files from your device, not streaming links. It does not unlock protected purchases or remove DRM.

M4A is a file container

The .m4a extension describes an audio container, while the sound inside can use different codecs. A familiar filename does not guarantee that this browser can read it. AAC and ALAC recordings may work when the browser supports their encoding, but support depends on the file and browser.

If decoding succeeds, the sound is resampled to 44.1 kHz and encoded as MP3. This is an actual conversion, not a renamed file. It is also a new lossy encoding: MP3 does not preserve a lossless M4A recording bit for bit.

This version supports one decoded mono or stereo track. It does not preserve original album art, artist tags, chapters, multiple language tracks or surround sound. The new filename ends in -audio.mp3.

Choose an MP3 bitrate

128 kbps creates the smallest MP3 among the available options. Try it for speech when file size matters. The 192 kbps default is a useful starting point for general audio. The 320 kbps option makes a larger file and lets you compare the result at a higher encoding bitrate.

A higher bitrate cannot recover detail that is already missing from the original. If your M4A recording sounds muffled or noisy, selecting 320 kbps will not fix those problems.

For a rough size guide, one minute at 128 kbps is about 0.96 MB, at 192 kbps about 1.44 MB, and at 320 kbps about 2.4 MB. File overhead and encoder padding can change the exact size. An MP3 can be larger than a small compressed M4A source.

Privacy and limits

Your selected file is read and converted in this browser on your device. Its bytes are not uploaded to a conversion server, and the tool does not send audio to a third-party conversion API. The site supplies the tool code and embedded MP3 encoder.

Choose one non-empty M4A up to 25 MB, between 0.1 seconds and 5 minutes. Mono and stereo audio are supported within the decoding limit. Large or unusual files can still fail because decoding uses your device’s memory.

Keep this page open until the result is ready. Cancel stops the current job and removes any partial result. Your original file remains available on your device.

Check sound and duration before downloading

The result panel shows the duration of the decoded source audio. MP3 encoding can add a little padding at the start or end, so the final playback duration may be slightly different. Listen to both ends before using the download in an edit or presentation.

A mono recording stays mono, and stereo stays stereo when the browser returns those channels. The converter cannot restore sound that was not recorded. If the original contains a silent audio track, the MP3 can also be silent.

If M4A to MP3 conversion fails

Try a known playable M4A or another up-to-date browser. A damaged file, unsupported codec or protected audio can prevent decoding. Renaming a different format to .m4a does not convert it.

If the file is too large or too long, use a shorter recording. If encoding fails on a phone, try a device with more available memory. Changing the bitrate clears the old result, so convert again before downloading with the new setting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Choose your local M4A, select a bitrate and click Convert M4A to MP3. Listen to the output and download the MP3.

Can I convert an iPhone voice memo?

If you have exported it as an unprotected M4A within the limits and this browser can decode it, you can convert that file here.

Does renaming .m4a to .mp3 work?

No. This tool decodes the audio and creates a new MP3 encoding instead of changing the extension.

Will MP3 keep the original M4A quality?

Not exactly. MP3 is a lossy format. A higher bitrate cannot restore missing source detail, and conversion from lossless audio is not bit-perfect.

Are my audio files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens on your device in your browser.

Will my album artwork and tags stay?

No. This version creates an audio-only MP3 and does not copy artwork, chapters or original metadata.

Why is the MP3 slightly longer than my M4A?

MP3 encoders can add padding. The decoded source duration and the final MP3 playback duration can differ slightly.
