Citation & BibTeX Sanitizer — APA, MLA and Harvard Templates

Citation and BibTeX helper — VH Original

Build a reference without inventing source details

A reference is useful only when it points to a real work. This helper gives you two practical routes: create a citation from details you already have, or tidy a supported BibTeX file. It does not search a database, identify an unknown author or fill missing publication information. Everything you type is processed in the browser. Start with the actual title page, journal record or publisher listing, and keep that source open while you enter the fields. The result is editable text intended for review, rather than a claim that every reference automatically meets a university style guide.

How to use the citation template

Select Citation template, choose APA, MLA or Harvard, then enter the author exactly as you want it displayed. Add a four-digit publication year and the work title. Journal, book or publisher and DOI are optional. Use the author order printed on the publication. The helper deliberately keeps your author text rather than guessing surname rules, corporate authors or multiple-author abbreviations. Select Generate and review the result field. Download text to keep the reference in a plain text file. Add volume, issue, pages, editors or access dates yourself when the particular source type and your required style call for them.

Clean a supported BibTeX file

Choose Clean BibTeX and paste entries using the familiar @article{key, field={value}} form. The cleaner accepts braced values, quoted values and numeric values. It lowercases entry and field names, alphabetically orders fields and normalizes repeated whitespace. It preserves the citation key and the content inside values, including balanced nested braces. It checks for missing closing delimiters, duplicate citation keys and duplicate fields. The output is a .bib download suitable for further review in your reference workflow. It does not silently repair incomplete records or merge conflicting entries, because either action could change which work your citation identifies.

Supported input and practical limits

The BibTeX input limit is 100 KB and 200 entries. Macro definitions, preambles and comment entries are outside this focused cleaner. Values that use symbolic macros or concatenation must be expanded before you paste them. Only the brace-delimited entry syntax is supported; parenthesis-delimited records need conversion elsewhere. A clear error should make you check the indicated entry rather than discard the entire bibliography. Nested braces used to protect capitalization remain meaningful. Whitespace normalization can still change deliberately spaced text, so inspect special titles, mathematical content and unusual author names after cleaning. Always keep your original bibliography until you have verified the cleaned copy.

Example and review checklist

Try the supplied example before entering your own references. For a manual template, the sample author Sharma, R., year 2024 and example title demonstrate the field order; they are fictional teaching data. For BibTeX, compare the original and cleaned field order. Check the citation key, accents, protected capitals, title spelling and year. A DOI is checked for a common syntactic pattern, not for existence. A correctly shaped DOI can still identify the wrong paper. Compare it against the publisher record. If your institution asks for a specific APA or MLA edition, use its official examples to finish the reference.

Privacy, limits and useful next steps

The helper makes no DOI lookup request and does not upload the pasted bibliography. Normal website resources can still load independently of tool input. Avoid placing private research notes or unpublished personal details in a reference field unless they belong in the output. Clearing the result removes generated text and its download link; it leaves the form available for another attempt. Citations are source-dependent: articles, websites, books and chapters need different details. This tool provides basic templates, not a full reference manager or source-verification service. For a larger project, organize your references with the Literature Review Matrix and compare edited text with the Text Compare tool.

FAQ

Does it find references from a DOI?

No. It accepts a DOI you already know and checks basic syntax. It does not search or verify a DOI database.

Are these complete APA or MLA citations?

They are basic editable templates. Check the required edition, source type, author conventions and additional fields yourself.

Can I clean an entire .bib bibliography?

Paste up to 100 KB and 200 supported entries. Unsupported macros, concatenation and alternate delimiters produce an error.

Will it remove duplicate references?

Duplicate citation keys are reported, not merged. Different keys referring to the same work require your own review.

Are capitalization braces preserved?

Balanced nested braces inside values are preserved. Review special capitalization and whitespace in the downloaded result.

Can I use this without an external API?

Yes. Citation generation and BibTeX cleaning run locally in your browser without a reference lookup API.

Advice

Before submitting or sharing the result, compare it with your original input and the requirements of your project. Keep the source text or declared assumptions so another person can review the output. A generated file is useful only when its content and format match the job you need it to do.
