Sahibzada Farhan’s 238 runs: Pakistan–Sri Lanka T20I series explained
Sahibzada Farhan made three half-centuries as Pakistan won the October 2026 T20I series against Sri Lanka 2–1. Sri Lanka nevertheless won the final match by eight wickets. The answer to “who won?” therefore depends on whether the question concerns that match or the series. Reading the results alongside Farhan’s innings resolves the confusion.
This report concerns the men’s internationals played in Rawalpindi on 9, 11 and 13 October. It uses ICC and PCB information available on the evening of 14 October. It is a completed-series report, not live commentary or a prediction for another fixture.
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: results of all three T20Is
The first PCB report and second report record Pakistan’s opening wins. The final report records Sri Lanka’s victory and Pakistan’s 2–1 series outcome. These are final team scores, rather than merely the targets.
| Match / date | Final scores | Result |
|---|---|---|
| First — 9 October | SL 182/8; PAK 187/6 | Pakistan won by 4 wickets |
| Second — 11 October | PAK 215/3; SL 133/7 | Pakistan won by 82 runs |
| Third — 13 October | PAK 168/8; SL 172/2 | Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets |
Pakistan’s final-match 168 set a target of 169. The finished chase can exceed its target because the winning stroke may be a boundary. A target and the final score need not be identical. Similarly, 2–1 counts matches won in the series; it is not a wicket score from a single game.
FACT BOX — the essential update
- Series winner: Pakistan, 2–1.
- Final-match winner: Sri Lanka, by 8 wickets.
- Farhan’s innings: 89, 73 and 76 runs.
- Sum of the innings: 238 runs.

Which Sahibzada Farhan record was broken?
The ICC’s 14 October report identifies the most runs in a three-match men’s bilateral T20I series between two Full Members. The previous leading figure was Abhishek Sharma’s 229 against Afghanistan. Farhan’s total is nine runs higher.
The conditions are part of the record. It should not be extended to every T20 series, a five-match series, franchise tournaments or all international formats. Read the category beneath a “world record” headline so that the comparison remains like for like.
It is also useful to view the contributions separately. One huge innings can lift a series total; here there was a fifty in every game. That demonstrates consistency within this series, without establishing a career-wide ranking or guaranteeing what will happen next.
| Innings | Farhan runs |
|---|---|
| 9 October — first T20I | 89 |
| 11 October — second T20I | 73 |
| 13 October — third T20I | 76 |
| Total: 89 + 73 + 76 | 238 |
How Pakistan built the lead in the first two matches
Farhan’s 89 and Maaz Sadaqat’s 50 were major contributions to the first chase. In the second game, Maaz made 96, Farhan added 73 and Muhammad Imran took 3/11. These figures are recorded in the corresponding PCB releases.
Analysis should not reduce both wins to the captain’s batting alone. A partner matters in a chase, while defending a large total needs a bowling contribution. Giving one player all the credit hides the team effort behind the result.
At 2–0 after the second fixture, the winner of a three-match series was settled. Losing the third does not erase the earlier results. That is why a final-day defeat and an overall series win can both be correct; count each match separately.
Third T20I: Sri Lanka’s win and Kusal Mendis
Pakistan finished on 168/8 despite Farhan’s 76. PCB records unbeaten contributions of 87 from Kusal Mendis and 40 from Kamindu Mendis, with the chase completed in 17.1 overs. Kusal received Player of the Match and Farhan Player of the Series.
The match award concerns one contest; the series award concerns the collection of games. A player from the side beaten in the final fixture can therefore receive the series honour. Consult the result line rather than using the awards to infer the match winner.
Sri Lanka’s final win prevented a whitewash, while Pakistan retained the 2–1 outcome. “Sri Lanka won” and “Pakistan won the series” describe different measures of success. They are not inherently contradictory headlines when the match and series are clearly identified.
What comes next? Keep the ODI event separate
The announced PCB tour schedule lists an ODI tri-series involving Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England from 18 to 31 October. This is a separate format, not an extension of the completed T20I series. Check current official fixtures before making ticket or viewing plans.
The 5 October squad announcement identifies Farhan for the T20I leadership and Shaheen Shah Afridi as ODI captain. Do not assume that different formats share the same captain or squad. An announced squad also does not establish the confirmed playing XI for a particular match.
For highlights, consult the official PCB video portal. Check current access, availability and any charge in the listing; this article does not claim that every clip is free. Use a scorecard alongside short highlights when assessing an innings, since a short selection of shots cannot show every phase.
ADVICE — a quick cricket-news checklist
- Match the date, format and venue before comparing results.
- Check the update time on a live-labelled post; a completed match is not a new fixture.
- Keep individual runs, the team score and the series result separate.
- Read the record qualifiers: men, T20I, three matches and two Full Members.
- Do not treat a strong innings as a guarantee of future performance.
