PDF / Notes to Anki CSV — Reviewed Flashcard Exporter

Make reviewable cards from your study material

A useful flashcard asks a clear question and gives a focused answer. This tool helps you turn prepared question–answer notes into an Anki import file. It can also extract selectable text from a PDF so you have the source material available for review. It does not send a document to an AI service or invent questions from arbitrary prose. You remain in control of what belongs on each side of a card. Start with a small topic, write a few precise pairs and check them against the source before exporting. The resulting file is plain CSV, not an Anki deck package.

Extract text from a supported PDF

Choose an optional PDF and select Extract PDF text. Files are limited to 10 MB and fifty pages. The PDF reader runs in your browser, using self-hosted reader assets, and the document is not uploaded for extraction. The extracted-text box is a review area; it does not overwrite your prepared card pairs. Check reading order, accents, line breaks and mathematical notation before using that text. A scan or photograph of a page may contain no selectable text, in which case the tool asks you to use OCR first. Password-protected documents and files beyond the stated limits are not supported by this extraction flow.

Write one Front :: Back pair on each line

The notes format is deliberately simple: one card per line, with the front and back separated by two colons. For example, What is photosynthesis? :: Plants use light to make sugars. Blank lines are ignored. Both sides must contain text. The first double-colon separates the sides; any later double-colons stay inside the answer. Avoid using the separator inside the question itself. The tool accepts up to five hundred cards and 250,000 input characters. It reports a repeated front instead of deciding which answer should replace another. Rewrite near-identical questions so the intended distinction is clear.

Review the exported CSV before importing

Generate creates a UTF-8 CSV with Front, Back and Tags columns, quoting fields and escaping quotation marks. The introductory directives specify comma separation, plain-text fields, the Basic note type and the tags column. Modern Anki versions support these import hints, but you should still inspect the import preview. Confirm that the first two fields map to Front and Back, choose the intended destination deck and keep HTML interpretation disabled for this plain-text export. This tool does not include pictures, audio, scheduling data or deck settings. Downloading a CSV prepares the data for import; it does not add cards to your Anki collection automatically.

Keep questions distinct and answers useful

A card that asks several unrelated things at once is hard to review consistently. Split a large topic into questions that you can answer and check in a few seconds. Keep important context, such as a year, definition scope or unit, in the question when needed. If an answer contains a list, decide whether recalling the whole list is necessary or whether separate cards make more sense. Review facts against your course material rather than relying on the extracted text alone. PDF line order can mix columns, headers and footnotes. The tool preserves your content; it does not verify its educational accuracy.

Understand duplicate handling and privacy

Anki can use the first field to identify an existing note, so repeated fronts may update or duplicate notes according to your import settings. Check that setting carefully when importing into a collection you already use. Shared tags are optional and apply to all rows; separate tags with spaces and avoid line breaks. The generated links are temporary browser URLs, removed when you change input or clear the result. Download before leaving the page. Keep the original notes so you can revise a card later. Tool input processing is local, while normal website resources may still load independently. Use material you are entitled to study and share.

FAQ

Does it generate questions automatically from a PDF?

No. It extracts selectable text, then exports the Front :: Back pairs you prepare and review.

Will a scanned PDF work?

Not unless it already has an accessible text layer. Use an OCR tool first and review the resulting text.

Does the CSV include an Anki deck?

No. It contains Basic-note fields and import directives. Select the deck in Anki; scheduling and media are not included.

Are Hindi and punctuation supported?

Yes. The export is UTF-8 and CSV quotation rules preserve commas and quotes. Check the import preview for your own notes.

Why are repeated fronts rejected?

The front can identify an Anki note. Distinct questions reduce ambiguous updates; review Anki’s duplicate settings before import.

What happens to my PDF?

It is read locally in the browser and is not uploaded for extraction. Clear or change the file when you finish.

Advice

Check the sample first, then use your own inputs. Keep the original source and review every assumption before submitting or sharing a result. Generated files help with preparation; the final academic or study decision still needs the appropriate source, course instructions and human review.
