Printable Grading Rubric Matrix Builder

Printable grading rubric — VH Original

Build a weighted grading rubric with editable criteria and four performance levels. Print in A4 landscape or save as PDF locally without an API.

Create an assignment rubric that students can read before they start. Enter one criterion per line, its relative weight, and clear descriptions for four performance levels. The tool builds a table and shows the points available in each cell.

How to use

Use the sample first. Each line has six values separated by the pipe character: criterion | weight | excellent | good | developing | starting. Change Total points, enter a title and choose Generate. You can use 1–12 unique criteria. Each description may contain up to 200 characters; do not include a pipe inside a description.

Calculation and process

Weights can add up to any positive total; they do not have to sum to 100. The tool normalizes each weight against the sum. For example, weights 40, 30 and 30 with a 100-point assignment give criterion maximums of 40, 30 and 30. Performance levels use 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 and 1/4 of each maximum. No evidence receives zero points.

Output and downloads

Print / Save as PDF requests your browser print dialog. Choose A4 landscape and Save as PDF, or select a printer. Paper settings and filenames are controlled by your browser. The downloadable HTML is another local way to open the rubric and print it later. This is a printable rubric document, not an automatic PDF file conversion service.

Limits

The displayed percentages and cell points are rounded to two decimals. Internally, the unrounded criterion maximums sum to the chosen total. Use the underlying weights if your school requires a precise marking rule or a different performance scale. This tool does not evaluate student work or assign individual grades.

Advice

Write descriptions around observable evidence, such as “supports the answer with two relevant examples.” Avoid vague personality labels. Share the rubric before the task and review whether each criterion measures the intended learning outcome. A longer rubric may print across multiple pages.

Frequently asked questions

What should each input line contain?

A name, weight and four descriptions, separated by five pipe characters.

Do weights have to sum to 100?

No. Positive weights are normalized to the chosen total points.

Does this assign student grades?

No. It builds an editable scoring guide; a teacher still reviews the actual work.
